LITSSW - Language Interpreter Training as Stepping Stone to Work

Project number: UK/12/LLP-LdV/TOI-561

Project Website

steppingstone_rgb72dpiFrom September 2012-September 2014 Iberika collaborated with partners from Bulgaria, Greece, Italy and Great Britain on the transfer, the improvement and the dissemination of  the training program LITSSW (Language Interpreter Training as Stepping Stone to work).

In this project we transferred an innovative and successful language interpreter training course, created and delivered by Dacorum Council for Voluntary Service in the UK, to partner locations Runi Center in Bulgaria, Iberika in Germany, Active Citizens Partnership in Greece and Centro per lo Sviluppo
Creativo Danilo Dolci in Italy. Our innovative language interpreter training program aims to train migrants who are already proficient in the local language to work as interpreters for migrants who have to face difficulties in communication with institutions because of language barriers. The interpreter’s mediation helps to improve the communication between migrants and institutions and enables people to move away from the margins of society and gain access to the public services.

The British 36-hours training course was evaluated, improved and adapted to the respective country’s conditions by all project partners.  Every partner delivered the training course twice to make sure that it fits best the student’s needs and the  country’s conditions.  In the training course the students acquired knowledge in the areas of general interpreter and interpreting notes techniques, law, medicine,  psychology and the structure of local and national government.

The amount of applicants for the second training course and the wish of the German Jobcenter to continue the project show us an obvious  need for a continuation of the project.  All project partners are willing to continue the project.

More information about the project you can find here.

Here you can find some examples of the pilot course structures.
