Berlin
Berlin, the capital of Germany, is one of the most interesting cities in Europe. Every year thousands of visitors descend on Berlin to get to know its history, culture, art and lively night-life.
The German capital is a particularly attractive destination during the summer period, because the city is full of life, festivals, concerts and open-air theatres. Berliners take to the streets, have barbecues in the parks and on the banks of the river Spree the terraces are buzzing. If, on the other hand, you arrive during winter, you will be able to see the picturesque Christmas markets, which are well worth a visit, whilst you have a Glühwein, a warm and sweet wine typical of the Christmas period.
Neither may we forget Berlin's interesting history. The traces of the of the division between east and west Berlin can be observed in the architecture, in its streets and, of course, in the remains of the Berlin Wall or at Checkpoint Charlie, former border crossing between the two Germanys. Nowadays, all German political activity is carried out from this city with emblematic buildings such as the Bundestag, the German parliament, reconstructed in 1999, whose enormous glass dome designed by Norman Foster stands out and from where you have a beautiful view of the city.
If there is one thing that makes Berlin stand apart from other cities, it's its contrasts. Berlin has different neighbourhoods, like Mitte, where we find both historical buildings as well as areas of financial activity, such as Potsdamer Platz, with its skyscrapers, or the street of Friedrichstraße, jam-packed with shops and offices. In Mitte as well you will find Alexanderplatz, or Alex, as it is affectionately known by Berliners. This square, which grabsour attention with the Fernsehturm, Television Tower, over 360 metres high, used to be the former centre east Berlin. In other neighbourhoods, such as Prenzlauer Berg, there is a bohemian ambience in the air. There exists numerous green areas, cafés and this district is, along with Friedrichshain, one of the favourites amongst students. Kreuzberg is also on the most lively zones in the city, with numerous restaurants and bustle at all hours of the day. Berlin is an open city, tolerant and international, a melting pot for cultures and people from all over the world.
In terms of Berlin's night-life, the best thing is for you to get to know it for yourself! You will find discos, bars and restaurants for all tastes. On the banks of the river Spree numerous venues are located where you can enjoy the night with a cocktail, good music and a beautiful view. This is, after all, one of the elements which attract tourists to the capital.
As you can see, this is a city for all tastes where you will find your preferences at all times of the year and in which you will meet people easily which will, in turn, further your learning. We look forward to greeting you!
